    January 4, 1841

    Approved January 4, 1841, by the 6th Congress of the Republic of Texas, Regular Session. Authorized President Mirabeau Lamar to contract with William S. Peters and his associates — a group of English and American investors — for colonization of the Republic’s public domain. Peters Colony began operating August 30, 1841.

    A second amendatory act was passed by the 7th Congress allowing the Republic to contract with additional empresarios — leading to the Fisher-Miller Colony, Castro’s Colony, and Mercer Colony contracts.

    Signed into law under President Lamar.

    Peters Colony began operations: August 30, 1841.
