Land and citizenship provisions — Section 10
March 17, 1836
The Constitution of the Republic of Texas was adopted by the Convention at Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 17, 1836 — the same convention that declared independence on March 2, 1836. Section 10 contains the citizenship and land provisions, including the exclusion clause:
“All persons, (Africans, the descendants of Africans, and Indians excepted,) who were residing in Texas on the day of the Declaration of Independence, shall be considered citizens of the Republic.”
